Program Overview
Speed School's Tablet PC Program began in Spring 2006 when the faculty passed a resolution that all freshman engineering students would be required to have a tablet PC for use in Speed School classes. The requirement went into effect Fall 2007. In Fall 2008, this will be extended to include freshman and sophomores - this includes students transferring in who still need to take 1st/2nd year Speed School courses. By 2011, all Speed School students will have tablet PCs.
Speed School and iTech Xpress (the university's computer store) have been in negotiations with hardware, software, and service vendors with the aim of providing various options for purchase of a tablet PC and software. Students are required to personally purchase a tablet PC from a vendor of their choice based on specified requirements and recommendations. Speed School recommends that students purchase the tablet PC through iTech Xpress, which has discounted agreements on select models from Dell, Gateway/MPC, HP, and Lenovo. iTech Xpress, located across the street from Speed School in the Miller Information Technology Center, will also provide warranty service on the tablets purchased through them. However, students may purchase tablets and receive service elsewhere, but make sure minimum specifications are met and the tablets are comparable to those recommended.
Required software will be made available to all Speed School students via a $25 technology fee, accessed each semester to all enrolled Speed School students. Software for the fall semester is available beginning July 1 and can be downloaded after registering for the fall.
Detailed information on the program, hardware, and software is listed on this website
as it becomes available. Any questions concerning the program can be sent to our official Tablet FAQ
or get the student viewpoints from the Student Tablet User Group (STUG). Questions not
intended for general view may be addressed to Associate Dean Mike Day at day@louisville.edu.
